How do I determine the correct skate size?
How do I know the right skate size?
-
Sit down. Put on a thin sock that you skate in (no thermal or knitted socks).
-
Loosen the skates a lot.
-
Push your foot into the toe of the skate, but do not curl your toes. For small children, grab the front of the skate in your palm and gently push the foot backward. Do not tell them to bend their toes, as this is not allowed.
-
Check if you can fit your index finger behind the heel.
- If the finger does not fit, the skate is too small OR too narrow!
- If the finger fits and there is even extra space to "wiggle" it, the skate is too big.
- For children, you can visually check how much space is left behind the heel.
-
If the finger fits, you can start lacing the skates.
- For non-growing feet, the ideal extra space is 5-6 mm.
- For children, the extra space should be 6-10 mm.
-
Only after proper lacing does the foot move into the heel pocket of the skate.
-
Try moving in them.
- Do squats, a spiral, and push-offs like when you skate.
- Slightly bend your knees and curl your toes inside the boot.
-
If your foot moves inside the skate or slides from side to side, the skate is too wide.
No pressure points? No movement inside? You've got the perfect fit! 🎉
⚠️ WARNING!
Did you measure your foot length, choose the right skate size, but your foot still doesn’t fit in?
If your index finger fits all the way in the back, and there is still too much space, you might have a wide foot and need to choose a different skate width or model/brand.
How else can I recognize the correct size?
🔴 LEFT: Footprint impression – the boot is too big
🟢 RIGHT: Correct size
🔴 LEFT: The boot is too large – the toe section has "collapsed" and sunk down.
🟢 RIGHT: Damaged rear part of the skate. Either the skates were poorly laced/tightened, or the skate was too big.
